Assistant Professor Ryan Layer is working to discoverÌýstructural variants in salmon’s genetic code. StructuralÌývariants are a major source of genetic and phenotypicÌývariation, but they remain challenging to accurately typeÌýand are poorly characterized in salmon.

Layer’s lab in the Department of Computer ScienceÌýand the BioFrontiers Institute is trying to address thatÌýproblem through the creation of open-source tools andÌýstrategies that can be used by anyone—from computerÌýscientist to field biologist. That includes creatingÌýand working with algorithms to decipher importantÌýinformation from within large genomic datasets.

For example, his lab is working to understand howÌýchanges in structural variants between wild andÌýfarmed salmon relate to behavioral traits needed forÌýdomestication of the species. Determining that couldÌýhave implications for conservation and sustainableÌýharvesting of the fish in the future. And any lessonsÌýlearned with the newly developed tools could be appliedÌýto other species to the same end.
