Why Study French and Italian?

The Department of French and Italian provides instruction in the languages, literatures, cinema, and cultures of France, Italy, and other areas where these languages are spoken.

We offer a wide selection of undergraduate courses, covering topics ranging from the Middle Ages to Italian-American culture and the Francophone literature of Africa, the Caribbean and the Middle East.

Our MA and PhD graduate programs in French are among the national leaders in successfully placing students in academic positions, and the highly productive research faculty provide expertise in all areas of French and Italian literature.

Modern Paris FREN 1900

Taught MWF 12:10pm - 1:10pm
Discover Paris as experienced by foreigners and locals alike, and how their views of the city were captured in literature, art, film and photography, from the nineteenth century to the present. We will study Paris as a center of modern art and literature in the nineteenth century, the essential destination for Americans with artistic ambitions in the twentieth century, and the culturally diverse city that it is today.

Graduate-level exploration of a prominent form of literary and artistic expression in the French-speaking world.

Space, Invention, and Wonder in Fairy Tales, Literature and Film ITAL 2271/REES 2271

Taught MW 3:35pm-4:50pm
Explores the themes of space, invention, technology and wonder in fairy tales from Italian, Russian, French, German, and Spanish traditions in order to compare their transformation in different national and historical settings. Students analyze the intersection of fairy tales and science in literature and film. Counts for the Space Minor. Taught in English.
